Tis The Season of Sap

Y'all, I'm sure I say this every year, but the sap falling from the giant tree in my front yard is out of control this year. Every year about this time I am more than ready to have someone chop down that dang Hackberry tree but there are always two things preventing me from doing it. One, the cost and two, it's the only large tree I have on my property and I'm convinced it helps with the utility bill in the summer by shading the house.  Maybe I'm wrong on that last point, who knows? At any rate, every year beginning in August and ending sometime in October (I think) I suffer through gallons of sap being dropped on my car and I hate it. 

This year I feel like the sap is worse than ever. Quite honestly, I probably feel this way every year in which case this year would be no exception. I wash my car two-three times per week at the Five Points Car Wash which is self serve and actually does a decent job. It's one of those car washes where you put the quarters in the machine and you can use the sprayer, brush, etc. I usually have to put two rounds of quarters in to get it sprayed, washed with the brush and sprayed off again. It's $1.25 for five minutes so for $2.50, I can get the sap off of my car for a few minutes and it feels oh so good when I do. 

Sometimes I will go to the Goo-Goo instead of washing it myself. I did that on Tuesday after work because after my car sat in the parking space on Sunday afternoon and all of Monday into Tuesday morning, there was so much sap on the car I could hardly see out the back windshield. This is not an exaggeration my friends. I did the double soap wash and it was worth it, although I feel certain I could have run it through another time for good measure. I also used the vacuum to clean out the leaves and gravel that had made its way into the floorboards of my car. The other bad thing about sap is that even when the leaves fall, they are covered in sap and so inevitably you will end up with a copious amount of leaves stuck to the bottom of your shoes. 

I also feel like the sap has a disgusting smell about it, but that could just be me and my overactive nose. The sap also penetrates the porch leaving a black reside on my chairs and the porch itself. There's absolutely no need in cleaning it right now because it will just be there again after a few days. So, I usually wait until the sap season is over before hosing down the porch and the scrubbing the chairs. The black residue also gets on the roof which really doesn't bother me as badly because it's not like people come by examining my roof, although if you are a visitor my home you may now. 

You may recall that last year I tried to combat the sap and the aphids with an order of live lady bugs. To be honest, I think that just made things worse, not better. I guess that's really all I have to say about sap. I'm just tired of it, ready for it to go, but sadly, that means all the leaves will be gone as well and I would prefer to enjoy the changing of the colors before all the leaves disappear. So, for now, I'll just deal with it and continue washing my car every other day. I'm sure the man who owns the Five Points Car Wash won't mind. 

It's The Fall of the Year 2014

Monday at 9:29 p.m. marked the official start of Fall for 2014 and I couldn't be happier that the season has arrived. I'm ready to put long hot summer days behind me and bring out the sweaters and boots. The weather has cooled off a little bit which is nice, but I'm ready for crisp breezy afternoons which will hopefully arrive soon. To be honest, I'm ready for the clock to fall back an hour as well. This is the time of year when I get up before the sun and I hate that it's pitch black when my alarm clock goes off. I'm ready for a sliver of sun to shine through the windows when I get up each day. 

I got to church really early Sunday night and was going to send off a barrage of random tweets but instead, I decided to write all my random thoughts down and put them in a blog post because for some strange reason a lot of you love it when I just ramble on about nothing in particular. 

Yesterday I mentioned that I had a great experience at the Publix pharmacy and so, I shall elaborate on that. After church Sunday morning, I stopped by to pick up groceries and some medicine that the ortho doctor had called in for my knee. When they rang up the medicine it was $64 and I said, thanks but no thanks. I told them to hold on to it and I would search the world wide web to see if I could find a coupon. That afternoon, I searched and found a coupon that would allow me to get the medicine for only $4. I went back to Publix before church that evening and as I was walking by the pharmacy counter to grab some vitamins I had forgotten that afternoon, the tech recognized me (kudos to her for that) and asked me what I wanted to do about the medicine. I told her I had found a coupon and was there to turn it in. When I gave her the coupon, it was missing a code that apparently didn't print out; but, the pharmacist was kind enough to look it up for me using The Google and I was able to get my medicine for $4 which is a heck of a lot better than $64. The folks there were so nice and helpful and it was just a great overall experience. The prescription, by the way, was for Celebrex. I'm sure I'll be dancing and doing yoga just like the old people on those Celebrex commercials in no time. 

Speaking of Publix, I don't recall if I ever mentioned this, but a few months ago, I went to my mailbox and had a surprise package from my friend Erika. She had sent me a "I Heart Publix" t-shirt and y'all I do, truly love Publix. The shirt made me laugh and I love it! Erika knows me very well!

After leaving Publix Sunday afternoon, I was stopped at the intersection of Whitesburg and Airport and there was a woman standing on the corner. No, not that kind of woman! This corner is known for protesters and so I was fully expecting this woman to have some kind of political sign. Instead, the woman (who was wearing a glittery purple mask to conceal her identity I assume) was holding up a sign that said, "YOU MATTER". I applaud this woman because you know what? You do matter and how awesome of her to spread some good cheer. It reminded me of Kid President. I think he would have enjoyed this woman and her sign as well. 

In other random news, the new season of Downton Abbey started in the UK this past Sunday which means there are only 15 more weeks until it will air here in the US. For the record, I do not care to rush through these next 15 weeks as this is the most wonderful time of the year (Fall, Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas); but, still, I am excited about the new season! 

As of Monday, there were only 100 days left in 2014 which means by the time you read this there will be less than 100 days left in the current year. Seriously, how and why does time pass so quickly? 

So far one of the best parts of my week has been planning out a play list for our upcoming road trip with my cousins Anna and Lauren. The three of us are going to a Pearl Jam concert in Memphis in about three weeks. Neither of them are PJ fans, but since the two folks who were originally supposed to go backed out for various reasons, these two cousins of mine graciously decided to step in. I'm looking forward to a fun road trip and anxious to see how our road trip play list comes out because there were a wide range of songs and artists requested. 

Thus began the first week of the Fall of the Year 2014! I have no doubt the remainder of the season has lots of good things in store.

The Slightest Hint of Fall

A cold front supposedly rolled through Northern Alabama on Thursday night/Friday morning and I was excited to wear jeans to the football game on Friday night. It's the little things, y'all. I left work early Friday to take The Pip to the vet as it was time for her annual shots. There is one girl at the front desk who always remembers Pippa and I really like that about this vet's office (although there are other things I'm not keen about). Pippa is "affectionately" known as "Wild Child" by the doctor that we see. She was very skittish when I took her in this time. I think she is afraid I'm going to leave her there. Clearly boarding her there during my trip to Hawaii was a very traumatizing experience because she hid behind me each time the doctor or his assistant came into the room. 

I had Dr. C. look at her paws which have been red and on which she has been gnawing. The last time I had her nails trimmed the girl told me she though The Pip probably had some allergy problems and it turned out to be true. She was put on Prednisone for the week to clear up the allergies and then she goes on Benedryl. I paid the outrageous bill (thanks to buying a years supply of heartworm medicine) and we were on our way. 

My dad came around 6: 15 p.m. or so to pick me up for the Friday night MA game; but, alas, the aforementioned "cold front" that came through wasn't so cold and I was back in shorts for another warm Friday night at the stadium. The game was supremely boring as MA was up 50-0 at the half and we left after the homecoming queen was announced. Sadly, the gal we were rooting for didn't win. 

On Saturday morning, I was up bright and early to start the day and the cleaning of the house. I had an appointment to take my car to the dealership at 9:15 a.m. The week before, I had taken the car in to be diagnosed and the result was that the left wheel bearing needed to be replaced. So, the part was ordered and I took it in to be repaired. I caught a ride home thanks to Billy and the shuttle service offered by the dealership. I watched some football and did some more cleaning before finding out the car would be ready around 2:00 p.m. Billy picked me up and took me back to the dealership to pick up my car. 

Before leaving, I went and checked in with Justin who was working. Sadly, they weren't selling many cars. I'm guessing football Saturdays in the South is not a good time for car salesmen.

I made it back home an hour or so before the Alabama kick-off and spend the rest of the evening watching football and tending to The Pip. Prednisone makes her kind of lethargic and mopey. So she wasn't too wild and rambunctious over the weekend. That evening, I did open the windows of the house for a while. My neighbors had an outdoor fire, I had football on TV and there was a slight breeze in the air. It was the slightest hint of fall, a tease of the good weather to come. 

Sunday morning was the usual trip to church and then the grocery store and then home for lunch and I did some cooking in the afternoon for a get together I'm hosting Monday night. That afternoon, I rode back to church with Paul and Leah for the Huddles kick-off for the 2014-15 school year. Huddles is a program we have at church with the youth kids. Since our youth group is so large, designated adults are Huddles leaders to help develop closer relationships with the kids and help to insure that no kids fall through the cracks. I'm a 9th grade leader and Paul and Leah have 11th grade. This is my first year helping out and I think it's going to be a lot of fun and and interesting experience. Huddles meets once a month for a time of fellowship and a devotional. I'm looking forward to seeing what this year brings.

Needless to say, it was a rather busy weekend as most fall weekends are. I'm definitely looking forward to cooler weather and bringing our the long sleeve shirts, hot chocolate, and cider. There's no better time of year!

Signs, Signs, Everywhere There's Signs

As I was driving around town on Saturday, I happened to notice a couple of signs and for whatever reason, those two signs have made an imprint on my brain. So, despite these signs being a small portion of today's rambling on, they prompted the title of this post. 

The first was as I was driving Pippa to PetSmart. I saw a person dressed as a clown on the side of the road holding a sign. I looked over and the sign read, "Honk if You Love Halloween!" and since I do, in fact, love Halloween, I gave a honk and then I gave a little laugh because I thought it was hilarious - it clearly doesn't take much to amuse me. 

The second sign I saw was after we left PetSmart and were on the way to pick up a pizza. I saw a lady on the side of the road waving a sign. She was standing in a driveway and there was what looked like a yard sale that had taken place earlier in the day. I figured the sign would say something about a yard sale but was surprised when I looked over and saw that the sign said, "Free Stuff". So, either there had been a yard sale earlier in the day and the lady had decided to just give the remaining things away for free and if that was the case then the people who bought stuff at the sale earlier in the day got a raw deal. The other thought that crossed my mind was that perhaps this lady got mad at her husband or boyfriend and decided to drag all his stuff out and offer it for free. I doubt this second scenario was the case, but thinking it might be gave me quite the chuckle. 

I finally got around to decorating for Halloween over the weekend. I was wondering how it would go with Pippa trying to be all up in the decorating business, but it actually went okay. I only had to chase her a few times when she grabbed paper that various items had been wrapped in. I purchased some pumpkins and mums and got those all set out on the porch. I am officially ready for cold weather and changing leaves as well as ghosts and goblins. 

Speaking of Halloween, some friends and I are having a Downton Abbey costume party later this month and I am very excited to see what kind of costume everyone comes up with. It's sure to be a fun evening and I will definitely be sharing some photos. 

Monday night I got into the baking spirit and made some pumpkin cookies and brought them in to work the next day. They are actually more like little cakes, but they were very good and the recipe can be found here if you are interested. The weather has been cool at night and so I also decided on tomato soup and grilled cheese for dinner. It's a classic and I love it! It's perfect for cool fall nights!

Welcome Fall 2013!

I neglected to wish y'all a happy Fall! Autumn officially arrived this past Sunday afternoon and with it came some glorious weather in North Alabama. After a rainy Saturday morning, the afternoon and all day Sunday were just beautiful with clear sunny skies and a nice cool breeze. It was a a lovely welcome to my favorite time of the year.  

The weekend wasn't too hectic for me but was still somewhat busy. Since I don't sleep as well as I did pre-puppy, I like to catch up on my sleep on the weekends and therefore spend the majority of my day on the sofa while trying to get some housework done too. On Friday, my dad and I had planned on going to the Madison Academy game. We had not been the previous two weeks because MA was away and they beat the snot out of everyone they play; so, I was really looking forward to the evening with my dad at the ball field. That afternoon, though, he called and told me he probably wouldn't be able to go because my mother was not feeling well and long story short she ended up having to get an IV treatment at the hospital. So, I ended up going by myself and sat with my friend Aimee's parents since they had a spot available next to them. 

I actually debated going to the movies. I really want to see Prisoners which came out on Friday and thought I might go see it instead of the football game. My love for concession stand food won me over though because I was really looking forward to a burger from the MA concession stand and that ended up being the deciding factor between the movies and the game. The game was a blow-out by half time as MA was leading 35-0 and it also was starting to rain and so I just decided to head to the house mainly because I was bored. Aimee's parents also left at the half which left no one in my vicinity to talk to and so I just went on home and finished out the evening watching TV.   

Saturday morning Pippa and I woke up early and got to work on some laundry and such.I was raining profusely when I got up and Pippa wasn't too thrilled about the prospect of taking a natural break in the rain. So, I stood out there for a good 30 minutes under the umbrella while she got soaked and finally decided to do her business. I guess she realized we would be out there all day until she went. I then went to Gibson's for breakfast which I ate with the small group I was in at my old church. The lady who let's Pippa out during the day is also in this group and I wanted to treat her and her husband as a small thank-you for all their help. Despite the fact it was pouring down rain, the parking lot was packed and I had to park way out back, but it was worth it. The breakfast was so good, as was the company and I was really glad I went.   

After breakfast at Gibson's I went to Sam's, which honestly, I need to write a whole post about because it's kind of my new addiction and I try not to go very often. I wanted to get some chocolate milk (because it's $3 cheaper than at Publix) and I also wanted to get a dog bed for Pippa in hopes that she might wallow around in it some at night rather than all over me. I also ended up getting a new blanket to use in my large chair in the den so Pippa won't scratch the upholstery off and a bag of tortilla chips (living on the edge, people!). I also ended up with one impulse purchase which was a Kuerig Coffee Brewer. I have wanted one of these for a while but haven't wanted to spend the money. I've been watching prices, etc. and happened to notice that this one came with 36 K-Cups and three extra filters and was $20 off the already low Sam's Club price. So, I stood at the display for no less than 20 minutes while I debated and looked up prices online and finally decided to just go for it. I'm happy to report I've had no buyer's remorse so far.The rest of the day I watched football and cleaned and tried unsuccessfully to nap. I grilled some hot dogs for dinner and called it a night around 10 p.m.

Sunday I went to church and afterwards had a delicious lunch with Jackie and her family at Outback. Then I picked up a few things at Publix and headed home where I was thankfully able to catch about an hour's worth of a nap before heading out again. I made a stop by Target before church because their sodas were on sale and also picked up some pumpkin walnut scones which are so very good, and if you haven't been by Target lately, they have some swanky new shopping carts which drive so smoothly. It's the little things in life!  

 

 After church I had again wanted to go see Prisoners, but good sense prevailed and I went home to mow the lawn which was in desperate need of a cutting. It took a sweet forever to get the lawnmower started and in fact I gave up at one point before going back for one more try. I don't know if the good Lord had mercy on me and my lawnmower or what, but it finally cranked up and I mowed faster than ever before so I would get done before the daylight ended. Thankfully I succeeded and grilled hot dogs again for dinner. I come from a hot dog loving family - I get it honest. 

So, it was really a good weekend, just not long enough, but they never are. The next few weekends are going to be busy with all sorts of activities and I'm really looking forward to those and to sharing about them with you. It's my favorite time of year. Happy Fall, y'all!

A Perfect Fall Weekend

I haven't much felt like writing the past few days and I guess the feeling is in the air because a lot of the blogs I check in on daily are also not being updated as often as they usually are - I guess we can call it the fall funk or something like that. In reality, I've been busy but not with anything that would be of great interest to you which makes writing more difficult than it is on most days. Alas, I shall do my best to come up with a post for you today and the rest of the week. Keep your fingers crossed it works out.

I suppose I'll start by giving you a Goga update. Of the six days Goga is open, I went five times and used the sauna four of the five times and drank the water and salty concoction all five times. I'll be going tonight (Monday) with Jackie and her mom and our friend Kim and while there I am planning to buy some of the bath salts that are supposed to be good for your skin. Without going into extreme detail about my bath, I'll let you know how the bath salts work out. Plans are to Goga another five times this week, using the sauna four times. I skip the sauna on Wednesday because I'm pretty sure my fellow church-goers would prefer me not be hot and sweaty during Bible class.

As for this past weekend, it wasn't very exciting. Friday night my dad actually came out to a football game with me which is kind of unusual these days as he doesn't leave the house much - he's turning into a hermit of sorts. We went to see Pisgah and New Hope at New Hope. Before the game we ran into Tommy Ragland who is the current probate judge of Madison County and is up for re-election come November. Please allow me to take this moment to ask you to please vote for him if you live in Madison County. My parents have known him since high school or longer and he is a very nice man. So, please consider voting for him for re-election. This has been a Public Service Announcement. Thank you.

The game itself was exceptionally boring as New Hope put a beating on Pisgah and we left before it was over. As we were leaving, Judge Marth Lynn Sherrod's daughter and another guy were outside the gate passing out literature for Judge Sherrod's re-election ('tis the season, people). The daughter asked us to vote for her mom and my dad said, "Is she a Republican or a Democrat?" And the daughter said, "She's a Christian!" Seriously, this was the highlight of my evening. Maybe you had to be there but it was quite an interesting moment. My dad said he really liked that answer and might vote for her. He asked me if I knew anything about her - I did not and still don't. It was just a funny moment.

Saturday I cleaned house, went to Goga and the grocery store and made some chili - a really thrilling day. Jackie and I met up at church that evening to work on preparations for a dinner our class hosted for the widows of the church. There were quite a few people who showed up to help and there wasn't that much to do so after about 30 minutes when all the "prep work" was done, we left and just hung out at my house for a little while. We also ate some of the chili I made earlier in the day - we live on the edge!

Sunday morning after church I went home to nap and then went back up to church around 3:00 to help with the final preparations for the dinner. Well, there really wasn't that much to do - again - and so we all just kind of sat around and did nothing until it was time to put food one plates and put the plates in the warmer.
The dinner was after church service, starting at 6:00 p.m. and we served ham, mashed potatoes, green beans, carrots, cranberry salad and homemade rolls that were out of this world good. I have since been in touch with the lady that did all the food and asked her for the recipe for the rolls. She is actually going to teach me how to make them and I am pretty excited about this because those rolls - well, they were a little slice of heaven if I do say so myself. Dessert was strawberry, chocolate, or apple spcie cake, all made by the preacher's wife. I had strawberry and it was delicious. My Aunt Linda and her friend Saundra (a new reader I might add) came to the dinner and I think they had a nice time. Everyone seemed to have an enjoyable evening - I know I did. The dinner ended a little after 7:00 and I helped clean up for a while and then left about 7:45.

The rest of the night was spent watching shows on the DVR and generally doing a whole lot of nothing. I think I managed to get at least two more loads of laundry done. The weather turned cool this weekend which was awesome. Someone also had an outdoor fire in our neighborhood and it smelled so delightful. I turned off the air and opened the windows and just enjoyed the cool crisp air. It was a great weekend, until Auburn lost to Arkansas at which point it became a perfect fall weekend! Hope you all had a nice weekend as well.

Welcome Fall 2011!

Welcome fall! I sure have missed you! Today is the first official day of fall, in case you were wondering or didn’t already know. Fall is my absolute favorite time of the year, which many of you probably already knew.

In college, when I was roommates with Melissa, I would get so excited about the “Fall of the Year” and without a doubt danced around and acted like an idiot when it finally rolled around. I always think of Melissa when it’s the “Fall of the Year” and I laugh about all the great times we had together, sitting out on the stoop, dancing and singing to TLC’s “Scrub’s” (which I’ve heard on the radio twice this past week), among other things. College – it’s the best years of your life people, don’t let anyone tell you otherwise.

So, tonight, I’m headed out to a brand new venue for me and I’m pretty excited about it. I’ll be covering the Etowah vs. Johnson game. This will be my second time to see Etowah play. The last time was a thriller against Madison County, this time I imagine it will be a blow-out over Johnson. I could be wrong though because I though the Madison County game would also be a blow out. So, we’ll see.

Anyway, the game is being played at Lewis Crews Stadium, which is the stadium on the campus of Alabama A&M University. I have never even set foot inside this stadium since it was built just a few years ago so I’m anxious to see what it looks like and what kind of concessions they have to offer, etc. etc. It should be a fun experience.

Last night I had some of my girlfriends over for dinner and catching up and we also had a surprise baby shower of sorts for our friend Amy. I think everybody except for one person got her diapers, wipes and baby wash or some combination of the three. Amy was surprised and we all had a fun time getting together and catching up on each other’s lives.

Well, I suppose that’s about it for today. It sure seems like when I started this post I had a long list of things to tell you all about, but now that I’ve gotten to this point I can’t think of much else to write about. I would like to say thanks for all the comments in the things That Annoy Me post. It was interesting to read about what grates on your nerves. I have no doubt there will be follow up post some time in the future.

Welcome September!

It’s September! Can you believe that we have now concluded eight months of 2010 and are entering the ninth? I sure can’t! It seems like it was just yesterday when we were saying Merry Christmas 2009 and Happy New Year 2010 and now it’s time to start thinking about and shopping for Christmas 2010!

When I was a kid I always heard adults talking about how time flies and I would always think to myself – they are crazy time goes by slow. I’m sure you were probably the same way. The older I get the faster the years seem to pass by. It makes me wonder if today’s children felt the way I did when I was a child or do they also think that time passes quickly.

September is one of my favorite months of the year and here are some reasons why:

• College football season always starts in September
• September means that there will most certainly be a change in the weather – from blistering hot days to cool mornings and afternoons. I can actually tolerate sitting on the front porch again.
• The latter part of September brings with it my most favorite time of the year – Fall
• Leaves start changing color in September
• The “days get shorter” – I realize a lot of people don’t like this fact, but to me there’s something comforting about nighttime coming earlier.
• A lot of people I know have birthdays in September –at least eight that I can think of off the top of my head.
• The new television season starts in September which means back to regularly scheduled programming and not having to search and search for something to watch and of course if there’s nothing to watch, there’s usually a football game on – did I mention I love football?
• Labor Day comes in September which means a day off of work – can’t beat that!
• September means Big Spring Jam in Huntsville – although not this year because of construction around the park but Huntsvillians often associate September with Big Spring Jam

I’m sure there are a lot of other things I could think of about why I like the month of September, but these will suffice for now. How about you? What do you like about September?

It's Fall - Enjoy It!

Fall is in full swing –hard to believe, isn’t it? It seems like it just started a couple of weeks ago. I had been waiting for the leaves to change and then when I woke from my influenza induced coma, I realized that they had changed while I was sick and many of the leaves have already fallen. I missed some of the prettier colors this year. I had planned to take my camera and capture some of the leaves this year, but never got an opportunity.

Thanksgiving is just two weeks away – are you ready? My dad and I have got to start planning. We have made a few plans, but only scratched the surface. We still have quite a bit to do before Turkey Day arrives.

One of the many things I love most about this time of year is that the grocery stores have so many great deals on baking items. I usually have one Crisco that I’m using and one as a back up. I was at Wal-Mart this week, and it was on sale for $2.00 and I had a coupon for 55 cents off so I went ahead and got another one. I couldn’t pass up that offer. They also had a great deal on Campbell’s cooking soups – normally $1.68, they were only 58 cents!! Holy moly – I had to buy four – I had a coupon for those too! Be sure and check out your local grocer for the great deals they have in store for this baking season. I sometimes wish that baking season lasted all year long, but then it wouldn’t be as special I guess.

Fall Is Here!

It’s finally fall here in Alabama! Of course now that I said it aloud, the weather will probably turn warm again. That’s usually how things go for me. The cooler weather came late last week and I couldn’t be happier. As some of you readers may know, I cover high school sports for our city’s newspaper on the weekends and this past Friday I was finally able to wear long sleeves to a football game! I almost cried I was so happy! Nothing much exciting happened over the weekend. I decorated for Halloween, cleaned house, did laundry and other fun things like that. October is shaping up to be a busy month and I hope to remember my camera so I can show you pictures of all the fun things happening around here.
