Pecan Trees

A week or so ago, I was pulling weeds out of the flower beds in the front of my house. As I pulled, I would just toss the weeds into the yard because I was going to mow the yard and planned to run over them with the mower. A few of the weeds seemed to be especially hard to pull u, but I didn’t pay much attention to them. Then, I took a closer look, only to discover that they were actually pecan tree saplings. How exciting! If you read the post from a few months ago about the pecans I was picking out of my yard, then you will know that my neighbors had a pecan tree that was very fruitful this year. Apparently a few of the pecans found their way into the flower beds and started sprouting. I pulled up five trees, and replanted three of them in pots. I hope that they will continue to grow and as they get bigger I will move them to bigger pots and then eventually plant them somewhere permanently.

Garden Update - Bird Attack!

Are you tired of hearing about the garden yet? I hope not, because that’s about all I have to write about these days. Friday at work, I was warned by my dear friend Gary McDonald that I should put some netting around my tomatoes because the birds would eat them. Sure enough when I got home, there was a half eaten tomato in the garden. I went to Lowe’s on Saturday and picked up some netting and put it around the tomatoes and other vegetables, but not before the birds destroyed two more tomatoes. I still have about 30 tomatoes growing away, I just hope the netting will keep those pesky birds out. Are you tired of hearing about the garden yet? June 24 Garden Update

So, I went out to the garden yesterday afternoon, as I do everyday, and discovered that my squash is basically toast. I’m not sure what exactly happened. A few days ago it was doing just fine. Then over the weekend, it looked as though it was dying, and I have been watering it the same amount as everything else. I think it was either a rabbit or a fungus. I’m not sure which. The roots seemed to be rotting but also all the fruit was disappearing. So, it may be a combination of the two. Who knows for sure? So, the majority of the squash got pulled up yesterday, which really made me sad because I was looking forward to eating it. But, I have to keep in mind that this is an experimental year and anything that actually does well is a success! Here are a couple of photos of the squash.

Along the lines of success, I have picked three jalapeños and two cucumbers. I gave the jalapeños to my aunt because there was nothing I needed them for at the moment. I honestly don’t know why I even planted peppers because I don’t really eat them. Like I said this is the experimental year. The cucumbers I haven’t tried yet. Hopefully they will taste okay. I also have a tomato that is turning red. It’s one of the newer ones and I’m not sure why it decided to turn red before all the others. Gardening is a mystery. But, overall I have almost 30 tomatoes coming in which is very exciting! Also, the banana peppers are coming along quite nicely. Here are some photos taken last week and yesterday, June 23.

Garden Update

The garden - June 11

My garden is really coming along nicely; a lot better than I had anticipated, in fact. Most of the plants now have fruit on them. There are a quite a few tomatoes, and more coming in. I have some jalapeño peppers that look like they are ripe for the picking. The only problem is, I don’t really know if they are or not. How do you know? There are also some tiny squash. The only thing that doesn’t yet have fruit is the cucumber vines, but they are growing like crazy and have some flowers on them; so, hopefully they will have a little fruit coming in before too long.

There are two sets of pictures here. I took the first set on Memorial Day, May 25; and the second set was taken yesterday, June 11.

The Hangover: A Review

So, after yesterday’s post I found that I have more than one reader. Hi, Mary! It’s nice to know there are loyal readers out there. I’ll try to do better in giving those gals more things to read about. Today, I give you a movie review of “The Hangover”

So, “The Hangover” is your typical bachelor party guy movie with all the antics and then some. But, it seriously is laugh out loud funny. This movie stars the oh so cute Bradley Cooper, who I have loved since his days on Alias, that funny guy from “National Treasure”, Justin Bartha, and some other funny guys, the funniest of whom is Zach Galifianakis. For the purpose of this review he will hereby be known as Zach because I don’t want to type out that last name of his more than once. Zach made this film. He had perfect line delivery and his character was so off the wall, it was ridiculous! I laughed so hard at one of his scenes I thought I was going to pee myself – this is not an exaggeration.

The story is that Justin Bartha’s character is getting married and he and his friends head to Vegas for the bachelor party. Now, the first problem with this is that what guy in their right mind is going to Vegas for a bachelor party two days before his wedding; but, hey, this is the movies and it’s all going to turn out okay in the end. So, these guys head to Vegas and long story short, they can’t remember what happened the night before and they have also lost the groom. The remainder of the movie is spent searching for clues that will help this crazy crew find the groom and get him back to California in time for his nuptials.

The major problem I had with this movie is that I was not able to relate to it. I understand that a few things can go wrong in one night, but not as many as happens to these clowns. I had the same feeling in “Superbad.” It was so frustrating for me because these characters had to overcome so many outrageous obstacles to get to achieve their goal. I might be the only person that gets frustrated in movies like this, I don’t know. I do know that Tony didn’t feel this way.

Bottom line: it was a good movie; very funny. Well worth watching, and everything turns out okay in the end – hey, it’s the movies! However, be prepared for a bit of crudeness, especially during the still photos at the end. Whoa!

Tony's take: pretty good

Until next time…

My Rant for the Week

I know I have really let my one reader, Candy, down by not having updated the Chronicles of Nat lately and I’m sorry. My life hasn’t been too exciting lately. But, I did see two movies this past weekend and I will try my best to get a review up soon.

As for today, I would like to rant for a little while, if you don’t mind, Candy. This past Saturday I attended the wedding of a couple from church. These two lovebirds did not send invitations to the entire church (insert big gasp here!), but instead, selected a certain number of people with whom they wanted to share their special day. I think most of the people who read this web site were invited. Since Saturday, I have heard numerous complaints from old women at church about how they weren’t invited. Well, you know what, old ladies? Should I be lucky enough to have a wedding one day, you probably won’t be invited to mine either! So, get over it!

Saturday was Ashley’s day and it was Charlie’s day, it was not YOUR day and if they wanted to invite the 10 most wanted men in America and not you, so be it. You need to suck it up and get over it! I honestly don’t know why people get their panties in a wad when they are not invited to things. It really irks me. You’d think the world was coming to an end because so and so didn’t get invited to a wedding.

Well, that’s really all I have to say today. It has just really been bothering me that people have been complaining because they didn’t get an invitation. It just really got under my skin that these people were offended. Just because people are getting hitched in the church building, doesn’t mean you are entitled to be there.

Thank you for reading and good night!
